STEIM Project applications

STEIM provides support on the following fields: You can apply for support by email. Carefully read the application procedure and the general project terms. Please take into account that STEIM plans ahead 3 to 4 months. The selection procedure can take 4 to 6 weeks. Note that in some cases STEIM can contribute financially to specific projects, but in general all support is 'in kind'.

> Orientation workshops

STEIM Orientation workshops are held roughly once every two months. These workshops are ment as an introduction into the STEIM way of working, and form an ideal first contact between artists and STEIM. Participants are selected to study and explore the possible technical and artistic means available at STEIM for a potential future project (f.e. a compositional work or a personal electronic instrument). This will be achieved partly through lectures by the STEIM staff, partly through collaboration between the participants, and partly through (informal) contact with the STEIM staff regarding specific requirements and wishes of each participant. The orientation will take place in a classroom setting, in STEIM`s studio 3.

There are 4 places available that include a room in our guesthouse and a workstation setup with the STEIM software and some additonal controllers, ment for participants from abroad. 4 additional places are available to local artists or people that arrange their own lodging, for those who wish to attend the lectures held that week. To apply for participation in an Orientation workshop you can send an email to knock@steim.nl with your motivation accompanied by your resumé, bio and links to audio/visual materials online.

A typical Orientation workshop schedule:

Monday 10-18h Arrival and check-in
Tuesday 11-13h STEIM tour and general introduction (Robert van Heumen)

Tuesday 11-13h Artist talk

For dates of upcoming Orientation workshops please go to the Orientation workshops page. In your application you should specify what dates you prefer. Note that we usually schedule the orientations steered by timing preferences indicated by applicants. So if there's no orientation scheduled yet in the period of your preference, this doesn't mean we cannot plan one.

> Residency projects

Projects that are more clearly developed and matured (typically after an orientation workshop) can be (a combination of) one of the following:
  • preparation of new (partly) electronic work;
  • development, refinement or modification of personal electronic instruments for music performance, based on STEIM technology (sensors, gamedevices, LiSa, JunXion);
  • programming of software (addons to the STEIM software, building of specific setups in LiSa).
Since residency projects usually put a higher strain on STEIM's resources, we have to be more strict in accepting those. Sometimes an Orientation workshop is a good start, and might already give the participant enough feedback to continue the work.

> Internships
STEIM has possibilities for workplacements, although limited. The area of the workplacement can be hardware (development of sensor devices), software (development of STEIM software - especially C/C++ programmers) or artistic (assisting in STEIM projects - although there are very little opportunities for this). The budget for internships is very limited.

> Advise & feedback
It is always possible to get advise or feedback from STEIM on projects that are related to general STEIM activities and technology. Please apply according to the application procedure below.

> Artist guesthouse
STEIM runs a small artist guesthouse as part of its facilities. The scheduling of the rooms is managed by STEIM's facility manager, who can be contacted for information and reservation at nico[at]steim[dot]nl. The fee for a room in the guesthouse is €15 per person per night.

The guesthouse has three guest rooms and two individual apartments. All the spaces are clean, basic and simply furnished. All guest rooms share one kitchen, shower and toilet, which are on the same floor as the common living area. The individual apartments have their own kitchen, shower and toilet. STEIM's guesthouse is a self catering accommodation. Meaning it is not a hotel and each guest must keep their own room, the kitchen and other common living areas tidy and clean during their stay.

Since there is no reception for the guesthouse you must arrange your time of arrival in advance by e-mail to ensure we will be available to welcome you and check you in upon arrival. While booking your tickets and planning your time of arrival please take into account that STEIM's office is opened from Monday to Thursday during office hours.

How to make a reservation:
Booking a room at the guesthouse is arranged by sending an email to the above mentioned email address. Please contact us to enquire about availability of rooms and studios during your confirmed residency. Please specify in the email: YOUR NAME, YOUR PROJECT and THE DATES you are interested in staying and we will reply with our availability for that time.

Application procedure

Send an email to the STEIM office with the following information:
  • A bio and CV - include material or references to your work that you consider informative with respect to the application
  • Links to audio-visual material online
  • A short description of the project
  • State clearly what kind of support you're requesting from STEIM (f.e. studio use only, hardware support, artistic advice, etc)

Format requirements:
  • If you send attachments, make sure they don't exceed 1.5MB.
  • Preferably use the PDF format for documents.
  • All documentation should be in English.
  • We do not accept non-electronic applications.
  • We prefer to listen to audio material online.
Generally we do not solicit vast quantities of paper work. Judgement is preferably based on immediate encounters with you and your work. Your application will go through the selection procedure by the artistic and technical staff of STEIM. As the number of applications exceeds our project capacity, we have to make a selection, based on technical feasability, artistic content, and available STEIM staff, studio facilities and accomodation. Please take into account that STEIM plans ahead 3 to 4 months, and that the selection procedure can take 4-6 weeks.
For more information contact the STEIM office. [email addresses]
