STEIM Hardware Meeting - Platforms for connectivity, creativity and community
Location: STEIM, Achtergracht 19, Amsterdam

In recent years we have seen a boom in various prototyping sensor platforms for artistic use. The idea of interfacing with sensors and microcontrollers in the arts is nothing new, however what we see different today is that the knowledge and tools to accomplish this has become more accessible through various channels and development has become ubiquitous. At STEIM we believe it is an interesting time for both the artists and designers to rethink about how technology may enhance (or deprive) creativity, and share these thought amongst others. We have invited a handful of developers of sensor platforms to give an informal presentation about their work and experience, and have planned a roundtable discussion with these developers and an Amsterdam based user group. This will be an intimate gathering amongst the invited and registered guests of the STEIM Micro-Jamboree.

Participants:
  • Dan Overholt - CUI USB Interface, UCSB, US
  • Emmanuel Flety - WISEBOX OSC/WiFi interface, IRCAM, FR

STEIM Applications Meeting - Presentations about the practice of using sensor systems - both hardware and software
Location: STEIM, Achtergracht 19, Amsterdam

Since many years, STEIM has worked together with (groups of) artists to realize their projects, most of them dealing with interfacing real-life with analog and digital circuitry. For the Micro Jamboree we invited some of those artists as well as representatives of other institutions to present their projects. After a refreshing lunch there will again be a roundtable discussion to exchange ideas about the presented projects, and the balance between technology and creativity in sensor systems in general.

Participants:
  • Per Samuelsson (Sweden) - musician/composer presenting a lecture/performance using two joysticks with junXion and Max/MSP - http://www.persamuelsson.se
  • Peter Sinclair and the Locus Sonus research group (Brett Bhalogh, Nico Bralet, Lydwine Van der Hulst) (Aix-en-Provence, France) - http://www.nujus.net/ http://nujus.net/~locusonus/
  • Andrei Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) - lecture/presentation of USB D-Sensors, the second generation ofÊTheremin sensors (the 'plug-and-play theremin') and their use in other instruments - http://asmir.theremin.ru/
  • CK Barlow (Santa Fe, USA) - musician/composer and long-term LiSa user presenting a lecture/performance of a live setup with LiSa and Max/MSP - http://www.ckbarlow.com/
  • Tom Tlalim and Voldemars Johansons (The Hague, NL) - two composers/musicians and (ex)sonologists present QuantaSonic, a project to create a 3D controller for sound synthesis and spatialization (using a 3-axis accelerometer & gyro sensor) - http://www.tomtlalim.tk
  • Andreas Otto (Luenenburg/Berlin, DE) - musician/composer presenting Fello, a STEIM project in cooperation with Florian Grote - Fello is an interactive listening system for the cello, but not limited to this instrument - http://audio.uni-lueneburg.de/extern/fello/

Locustream Tuner: Locus Sonus installation during the Micro Jamboree & Concerts

Audio streams are captured by open microphones put in place by people who are participating in the project from around the world, these are not playlists or field recordings, simply the local sound environment which is encoded & uploaded in real time.

The installation consists of a pair of wires stretched the length of the exhibition space with a small ball threaded on them. The position of the ball can be altered by the public acting like a tuner, an audio promenade where the user slides there way through a series of remote audio locations.

Locus Sonus is a research group specialized in audio art (École Supérieure d'Art d'Aix-en-Provence, École Nationale Supérieure d'Art de Nice Villa Arson). Our objective is to experiment and evaluate the innovative and transdisciplinary nature of audio art forms in a lab-type context. We are are also concerned with in the communal, collective or multi-user aspects inherent to many emerging audio practices and which necessitate working as a group. Two main themes define this research - audio in it's relation to space and networked audio systems. The "Lab" proposes a process combining practical artistic experimentation and critical evaluation in a group context.

Locus Sonus Lab: Nicolas Bralet / Sabrina Issa / Nicolas Maigret / Esther Salmona / Lydwine van der Hulst / Brett Balogh (Exchange Student)
Coordination: Jérôme Joy / Anne Roquiny / Peter Sinclair

Locus Sonus streamers: 00130Gallery Helsinki (Juan Kasari), Apo33 Nantes, Harmut Bosbach, Cap15 Marseille, CRISAP Creative Research into Sound Art Practices / University of the Arts London (Angus Carlyle, Michael Wright), Paul Demarinis (Stanford University), Karen Dermineur, Bjšrn Eriksson, John Klima, Jason Nanna, Marc McNulty, NOTAM Norsk nettverk for Teknologi Akustikk og Musikk Oslo (Risto Holopainen), Ragnar H.
