The Benjolin - Build your own electronic fun-box (FULL)
(Start) date: March 27, 2010
Lecturer(s): Rob Hordijk & Joker Nies

In a one-day workshop conducted by legendary synth builder Rob Hordijk and circuit bender Joker Nies, participants will build the Benjolin, an analog sound-device that is very different from what you usually will find with other DIY-kits. This kit will ONLY be available through the workshop, it is not for sale separately. The class cost is just €70, plus a materials fee of €80. You will bring home an analog synth, and you can tell everyone that you`ve build it yourself!

The Benjolin is a ‘noise box’ that is ‘bent by design’, meaning that it always has a definite amount of unpredictability while it is still intuitive to play. The Benjolin features two eighteen-octave range voltage controlled oscillators that drive a ‘rungler’ circuit, circuitry that in essence uses a special interference technique feeding back into the oscillators to force them into wild chaotic behaviour. A special slightly chaotic filter is both excited and modulated by the signals from the rungler circuitry processes, producing sounds between fat drones to grungy noise havoc. The kit is somewhat challenging to build, but with a little patience and accuracy a beginner in DIY can definitely do it successfully.

The workshop will take place at STEIM, Achtergracht 19, from 12:00 - 18:00h.
Teacher BIOs

Rob Hordijk (The Hague, The Netherlands). Originally a sculptor and jewelry designer, Rob has established himself over the years as an expert in sound synthesis techniques. In the last couple of years he specializes in hand-build analog electronic instruments that have distinct sonic signatures, instruments that are somewhere between musical instruments and objets d’art. His instruments are used in live performances by a number of established improvisors all over the planet. An example of an instrument designed by Rob is the Blippoo Box, featured in the upcoming 19th issue of Leonardo Music Journal. Rob has been teaching, lecturing and conducting workshops since 1983 at a number of institutes in The Netherlands, and occasionally in other places on this planet.

Joker Nies (Cologne, Germany) is a musician, sound-designer, sound-engineer, photographer and technical editor for the German Sound&Recording and Keyboards magazines. Recent activities include software synth-design in MAX/MSP for the german Keyboards magazine, and production and sound design for radio-plays for the German WDR radio-broadcast. Joker Nies is known for his energetic improvisations on unusual electronic instruments and re-built electronic toys all over Europe and the US. He has played with many established improvisors and is a.o. part of the trio Die Schrauber. Joker is a leading expert in circuit bending and has conducted many inspiring circuit-bending and DIY workshops in the whole of Europe and the USA.
Orientations are held roughly once every 2 months, and last one week (Tuesday through Tuesday - not on Fri/Sat/Sun). 3 Or 4 persons are selected to study and explore the possible technical and artistic means available at STEIM for a potential future project (f.e. a compositional work or a personal electronic instrument). This will be achieved partly through lectures by the educational department of STEIM, partly through cooperation between the participants, and partly through (informal) contact with the STEIM staff regarding specific requirements and wishes of each participant. The orientation will take place in a classroom setting, in STEIM`s studio 3.
Lodging will be provided in our simple self-catered guesthouse. Both workspace and lodging are offered free of charge. STEIM does not cover travel and food.

This workshop will be from 30 March - 6 April 2010.

Advanced real-time sound and data processing with FTM&Co is a 4-day advanced Max/MSP workshop by Ircam researcher-developer Diemo Schwarz that will provide an introduction to the FTM&Co extensions for Max/MSP, looking into the basics and the advanced use of the Ircam libraries FTM, MnM, Gabor and CataRT for interactive real-time musical and artistic applications.

The basic idea of FTM is to extend the data types exchanged between the objects in a Max/MSP patch by complex data structures such as matrices, sequences, dictionaries, break point functions, tuples and whatever might seem helpful for the processing of music, sound and motion capture data. It also comprises visualization and editor components, and operators (expressions and externals) on these data structures, together with file import/export (SDIF, audio, MIDI, text, ...) operators.

As examples of applications in the areas of sound analysis, transformation and synthesis, gesture following, and manipulation of musical scores, we will look at the parts and packages of FTM that allow arbitrary-rate signal processing (Gabor), matrix operations, statistics, machine learning (MnM), corpus-based concatenative synthesis (CataRT), sound description data exchange (SDIF), and Jitter support. The presented concepts will be tried and confirmed by applying them to programming exercises of real-time musical applications, and free experimentation.

FTM&Co is developed by Norbert Schnell and the Real-Time Music Interaction Team (IMTR) at Ircam and is freely available at http://ftm.ircam.fr.
Bio

Diemo Schwarz is a researcher--developer in real-time applications of computers to music with the aim of improving musical interaction, notably sound analysis--synthesis, and interactive corpus-based concatenative synthesis.

Since 1997 at Ircam (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique--Musique) in Paris, France, he combined his studies of computer science and computational linguistics at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, with his interest in music, being an active performer and musician. He holds a PhD in computer science applied to music from the University of Paris, awarded in 2004 for the development of a new method of concatenative musical sound synthesis by unit selection from a large database. This work is continued in the CataRT application for real-time interactive corpus-based concatenative synthesis within Ircam`s Real-Time Music Interaction (IMTR) team.
Robert van Heumen

This workshop will be from 8 - 15 June 2010.
