New copyright regulations and it's effect on the creative process

Join us for an informative discussion on the effects of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement on music. Known as ACTA, the agreement has been for years under international negotiation and is designed -amongst other issues- to drastically change the policies concerning counterfeiting copyrighted works.

While ACTA has attracted strong support and fierce opposition, this talk brings together trade associations, artists and academics with different views to discuss the effects of the legislation to the creative process. The panel will tackle important questions like:  How the proposed ACTA will affect 'fair use' and equivalent practice?  What will be the effects of the enforcement practices on the creative economy and music creativity? Issues of finance, property and matters of sampling/remixing will also be discussed.

Introductory presentation to ACTA and related issues by Kennisland copyright expert, Paul Keller.
Panel discussion with Tim Kuik (stichting BREIN), Mattin (artist)  and Ante Wessels (vrijschrift, FFII).
The discussion will be moderated by STEIM director, Dick Rijken.

PLAYING ACTA (EN)

Following the ACTA panel discussion earlier in the afternoon, two performances by involved artists Mattin and dj sniff. While ACTA sets new copyright enforcement standards, dj sniff works with an extensive and rare collection of proprietary recordings. Politically engaged composer and author Mattin explores improvisation as a way to try to understand how we are subjectified by capitalism.

Turntablist dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) explores the unique sonic qualities of vinyl, re-performing music recording through custom-built instruments. He recently released the album "EP - dj sniff plays Evan Parker" on Psi records and is the Artistic Director of STEIM djsniff.com

Known for his recording prolificacy and critical stance to the notion of copyright, artist Mattin tries to approach the essence of improvisation and explore the limits of musical context, using silence and distortion. Mattin runs the record label 'Free Software Series" and is co-editor of the collection of essays 'Noise and Capitalism'. His recordings and essays are freely available on his website mattin.org
