Hotpot Lab #14
Wave Field Synthesis and Realtime Applications
Presentations by Arthur Sauer & Miguel Negrão of Game of Life Foundation
"Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) is a sound production technology designed specifically for spatial audio rendering. Virtual acoustic environments are simulated and synthesized using large numbers of loudspeakers. The innovation of this technology is that sound can appear to emanate from desired virtual starting points, and then move through space in many possible defined spatial pathways."
The Game of Life Foundation promotes its unique mobile WFS system through commissioning artists to compose for the system and presenting these pieces at numerous events. For the next HPL #15 we invite the core members of the group to talk about the fundamentals of the system and the newly developed realtime version. We plan to host a workshop in November for artists from different disciplines to work with this system and showcase the results through a collaboration with OT301 and GENECO.
Venue: STEIM, Utrechtsedwarsstraat 134, Amsterdam
Time: 20.30 hrs. (Door open 20.00 hrs.)
Arthur Sauer is a composer, performer and organizer. He is founder of The Game of Life Foundation. He was initiator of the project THE 192 Loudspeaker Experience¹ for which the Wavefield Synthesis speaker installation was built.
He made several pieces and installations in which speakers and spatial rendering played an important part. He makes music for theatre, film, dance, ensembles and electronics. Furthermore he made and played theatre with a.o. Hotel Modern.
Miguel Negrão is a sound artist born in 1981 in Lisbon, Portugal. Under the alias ZLB he has been active with Drone and Ambient music projects, having released one album "I Was Vaguely Aware of Something" on Friendly Virus, an independent record label and collective of which he is part and helped create. He has performed or presented pieces for the Wave Field System, Acousmonium sound diffusion system of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales and for the SoundWalk installation of Miso Music Portugal. With a Bachelor in Applied Mathematics, he has recently finished a Masters at the Sonology Institute at the Den Haag Conservatory on the topic of "Strategies in diffuse spatialization", specifically, using the 192 speaker Wave Field Synthesis system. He is currently doing software development for the WFS system of the Game of Life foundation in the Netherlands.
