In his workshop at STEIM he'll discuss the usage of MAX / MAX4Live in his own projects and will provide insights into the concept of MAX4Live and strategies for building own devices with it. He will question if and when it can make sense to spend time writing own patches in Max, and when it will be better to simply use what is already there. The workshop will also contain a critical review of own projects in the light of these questions. Since Robert Henke is an enthousiastic live performer, he'll also will discuss questions of control and interaction using Live and Max in conjunction with hardware controllers, and concepts of how to manage and create complexity in a performance situation, and how and why this can also be useful in a more general music creation process. The evening consists of performances crossing musical styles and genres, from sedate chamber music to deafening noise. To keep the unexpected nature of the night true to its name, the programme will be kept under wraps for as long as possible. But here’s a sneak preview…

Through numerous collaborations they both established an unique instrumentalism early on in their careers; Yoshida's faint but electric "howling" voice and Kawasaki's ever-evolving analog synth structures. Today they continue to be influential in Tokyo's subculture scene not only through their musical activities but also through writings and installation based work. This will be a rare European appearance of the duo in their third collaboration with dj sniff. Also performing on the bill is Sydney based sound artist and writer Gail Priest. Her sound work delicately weaves together processed voices with electronic textures creating sometimes eerie sometimes soothing soundscapes. These workshops are ment as an introduction into the STEIM way of working, and form an ideal first contact between artists and STEIM. Participants are selected to study and explore the possible technical and artistic means available at STEIM for a potential future project (f.e. a compositional work or a personal electronic instrument). This will be achieved partly through lectures by the STEIM staff, partly through collaboration between the participants, and partly through (informal) contact with the STEIM staff regarding specific requirements and wishes of each participant. The orientation will take place in a classroom setting, in STEIM`s studio 3. Located in Valencia California, CalArts has been one of the traditional hubs for music and art experimentation on West Coast. Since 2007, STEIM and their Experimental Sound Practices program have established an exchange program where they send a group of promising students to work intensively on projects in our studios. For each edition we have experimented with Professor Clay Chaplin in different methods of working with the students, and have seen fruitful results ranging from interactive circuit sculptures to a multi-media ensemble performance. They return this year again with a new group of students with a variety of backgrounds and interests. Come check out what they come up with this time! The W.O.M. is a simple electronic noise synth kit that has been designed both to be a fun experimental instrument and to provide an interesting introduction to lofi audio electronics. The workshops are open to all, even people with no prior electronic experience - we'll look at components and schematics, learn how to solder and put together a circuit. Once everyone has built their own WOM kit (yours to keep at the end) we'll have a play and then investigate how the different parts of the circuit behave and how ideas can be re-used in your own projects. A quick but comprehensive event that will give you the confidence to begin building your own electronic devices. We will study flexible, extensible and reliable integration of JITLib-based instruments with a wide variety of controllers. Each coding session is complemented by a practice session to evaluate the performance of our programs under live conditions in solo or ensemble constellations. So for musicians who decide to use unconventional or hand-made instruments, the real challenge is to develop an unique voice beyond the gadgetry, which usually takes longer than the time it took to make the instrument itself. Through our concert series, we hope we can get the point across that it's more about a musical practice rather than just a nerdy obsession. For this edition, we are happy to feature Gordon Ashworth's solo project Concern which builds beautiful drones based on cassette tape loop system and professional circuit bender Peter Edwards who performs, teaches and sells his circuit bent instruments through his company Casper Electronics. STEIM's Byungjun Kwon has a whole new set of handmade instruments that he showcased in Korea earlier this year which you know will be familiar object doing unfamiliar things. Hope to see you there!
