STEIM project support

STEIM provides support on the following fields:
You can apply for support by email. Carefully read the application procedure and the general project terms. Please take into account that STEIM plans ahead 3 to 4 months. The selection procedure can take 4 to 6 weeks.

> Orientation workshops

Orientation workshops are held roughly once every 2 months, and last one week. Up to 4 participants are selected to study and explore the possible technical and artistic means available at STEIM for a potential future project. This will be achieved partly through lectures by the educational department of STEIM, partly through collaboration between the participants, and partly through (informal) contact with the STEIM staff regarding specific requirements and wishes of each participant. An orientation workshop can be very useful to more clearly define your project and the support you'd need from STEIM. Or simply to get a better idea of what STEIM has to offer and how we can establish some kind of collaboration.

Participation in the orientation workshops is on invitation only, and limited to 4 participants. If you are interested, please apply according to the application procedure below.

Arrival is usually on a Monday, then there are lectures on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday and in the weekend STEIM is closed, but participants are very much encouraged to work on the software and hardware tools provided, to get as much out of the visit as possible. The following Monday is the final day, with individual talks about possible future collaborations. During this week, the participants will have 24/7 access to their own workspace (also in the weekend - you will receive a key for the building), and lodging will be provided in our simple self-catered guesthouse. Both workspace and lodging are offered free of charge. STEIM does not cover travel and food.

A typical orientation workshop schedule (although this can change according to participant or STEIM staff requests):
  • Tuesday 11-13h STEIM introduction
  • Tuesday 14-16h STEIM tour and LiSa intro
  • Wednesday 11-13h More indepth LiSa class and junXion introduction
  • Wednesday 14-16h More indepth junXion class
  • Thursday 11-13h STEIM artistic direction & turntablism
  • Thursday 14-16h Applied LiSa & junXion with eponymous instruments
  • Monday throughout the day - individual meetings about future plans
For dates of upcoming Orientation Workshops please go to the workshops page. In your application you should specify what dates you prefer. Note that we usually schedule the workshops steered by timing preferences indicated by applicants. So if there's no workshop scheduled yet in the period of your preference, this doesn't mean we cannot plan one.

> Residency projects

Projects that are more clearly developed and matured (typically after an orientation) can be (a combination of) one of the following:
  • preparation of new (partly) electronic work;
  • development, refinement or modification of personal electronic instruments for music performance, based on STEIM technology (sensors, gamedevices, LiSa, JunXion);
  • programming of software (addons to the STEIM software, building of specific setups in LiSa).
Since residency projects usually put a higher strain on STEIM's resources, we have to be more strict in accepting those. Sometimes an orientation workshop is a good start, and might already give the participant enough feedback to continue the work.

> Internships
STEIM has possibilities for workplacements, although limited. The area of the workplacement can be hardware (development of sensor devices), software (development of STEIM software - especially C/C++ programmers) or artistic (assisting in STEIM projects - although there are very little opportunities for this). The budget for internships is very limited.

> Advise & feedback
It is always possible to get advise or feedback from STEIM on projects that are related to general STEIM activities and technology. Please apply according to the application procedure below.

> Artist guesthouse
STEIM runs a small artist hotel as part of its facilities. The rooms are usually occupied by project guests.

Application procedure

Send an email to the STEIM office with the following information:
  • A bio and CV - include material or references to your work that you consider informative with respect to the application
  • Links to audio-visual material online
  • A short description of the project (*)
  • State clearly what kind of support you're requesting from STEIM (f.e. studio use only, hardware support, artistic advice, etc) (*)
(*) can be omitted in case of an application for an orientation workshop

Format requirements:
  • If you send attachments, make sure they don't exceed 1.5MB.
  • Preferably use the PDF format for documents.
  • All documentation should be in English.
  • We do not accept non-electronic applications.
  • We prefer to listen to audio material online.
Generally we do not solicit vast quantities of paper work. Judgement is preferably based on immediate encounters with you and your work. Your application will go through the selection procedure by the artistic and technical staff of STEIM. As the number of applications exceeds our project capacity, we have to make a selection, based on technical feasability, artistic content, and available STEIM staff, studio facilities and accomodation. Please take into account that STEIM plans ahead 3 to 4 months, and that the selection procedure can take 4-6 weeks.
For more information contact the STEIM office. [email addresses]
