Hand Controller

The project topic for my residency at STEIM for the last two weeks is the Hand Controller. I am working in Korea as a sound artist and my recent interest are laid in sound device, electric controller and DIY electric musical instrument for live performance, to name a few.

The main components of the Hand Controller are as follows:

  1. Arduino
  2. MPR121 (http://sparkfun.com/products/9695)
  3. Wires and switch

Hand Controller is based on the traditional performance methods of flutes and recorders. In order to make sure that a performer is able to use both hands and other electric controller such as computer keyboards and knobs-style controller, the Hand Controller has a hole large enough for the fingers of the performer. A multi-performance touch sensor (MPR121) is wired to the body of the Hand Controller with bolts and is also connected to Arduino for converting human touches to electric signals.

As the next step, the Hand Controller sends both serial and MIDI messages via Max6 to Arduino and subsequently the conventional sequencer musical sources, e.g. Cubase, Ableton Live and Logic, are generated. One switch connected to Arduino also makes possible to change sound key, octave, different musical instruments. The figure below is a screenshot of Max6 to demonstrate these functionalities within the Hand Controller.

As the future plan, I envisage installing Xbee and Arduino Pro into the current version of Hand Controller for its wireless performance and furthermore a realisation of simultaneous hand movement detection by a Gyroscope accelerator with three axes sensitivity is planned as the next stage.
